From the liner notes:
The symphonic poem for full orchestra Op. 33, About the Eternal Longing, is inspired by Hans Andersen’s poem in prose from the story of the moon about a flock of wild swans; one swan is tired and comes down to the surface of the water in order to fly the next day alone into the rising sun, with an immense longing; but left alone in the undulating waters …. This longing is not of a physical nature, and in the chorale of the sea and in the expansiveness of the second theme of eternal longing, there is already a sense of eternity in connection with love that brings it very close to prayer.
